A Tuesday in Worli

Getting home

Coming from Bandra you are over the Sea Link and down the ramp before a phone call ends, then the Coastal Road merge at the Worli end slows everything to a shuffle. From the south it is Dr Annie Besant Road and the argument at Worli Naka. Autos do not come here, so you either walk in from the Metro or the cab puts you at the podium.

Your street

Sea Face is towers on one side and a parapet on the other, and the wind off it is strong enough to take a door out of your hand. Two minutes inland the scale collapses into Worli Village, where the lanes run a metre and a half wide, the drying racks smell of the morning catch, and nobody at all is jogging.

How the week goes

Evenings belong to the promenade. The whole Sea Face walks between six and eight, and by ten it is empty enough to hear the water. The koliwada keeps its own calendar alongside: Narali Purnima in August, the Golfa Devi shrine festivals, the Worlikar Kombad Holi. On NSCI Dome concert nights, Annie Besant Road behaves like a three-hour car park.

What you'd put up with

That sea view is also a maintenance schedule: salt on the windows every week, corrosion working through the lower floors, and a hundred and thirty-five thousand a month for the privilege. High tide plus heavy rain puts water on the Sea Face road. Having no autos is a daily tax, since every two-kilometre errand is a cab, and Annie Besant Road at seven makes two kilometres feel like eight.

Written from the same researched record as the rest of this page. Every place named here is one we hold a source for. Where we had nothing to say about a corner, we left it out rather than filling it in.

Zone: Worli, division 13 (zone 13/96, Worli Sea Face to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg). Two republishers of the Mumbai tables differ by a consistent 15%. We could not verify either against the IGR original, so treat these as indicative of the zone, not as your flat's valuation. Look up your own zone at IGR Maharashtra.

Worli is Mumbai at its most cinematic — the sea link arcing past glass towers, the old fishing village still tucked beneath them. Rentals skew premium and views do the selling. With the coastal road open, it has become the best-connected luxury address in the city.

The calendar

Festivals, crowds and what to expect

2 festivals in the Mumbai calendar reach Worli, and 1 of them close roads. 1 have a date we have checked; the rest are set year by year.

  • Ganeshotsav

    Roads close
14 Sep 2026 – 25 Sep 2026in 2 weeks· set by the Hindu calendar, so it moves each year

Why this affects this area: Dr Annie Besant Road at Worli Naka and R.G. Thadani Road become no-parking on immersion days.

Runs late. Maharashtra's annual loudspeaker-relaxation notification extends the amplified-sound deadline to midnight on four Ganpati days (2nd day, 5th day, Gauri visarjan and Anant Chaturdashi), and the Anant Chaturdashi processions themselves run past midnight into the next morning.

  • Narali Purnima

    Barely felt
Date set each year. We don’t have one on file

Why this affects this area: Worli Koliwada holds its own Narali Purnima procession to the sea.

Runs late. The evening procession is accompanied by a van of live musicians with amplified speakers moving through the koliwada.

Dates for Hindu festivals come from the panchang and move by weeks each year; Islamic dates are confirmed by a moon sighting the evening before and can move a day. We hold checked dates through 2027 and show nothing where we do not have one.

Also noted locally in Worli

What it costs in Mumbai

  • part-time cleaning (jhadu-pocha)₹3k₹9k / month

One household, part-time, six days a week. Both sources price this by task bundle rather than by the hour: GetBai (BookMyBai) quotes INR 3,500-9,000/month for a 'part-time maid'; Kaamwalibais quotes INR 3,000-12,000/month and states the figure 'depends completely on tasks selected'. A single task (utensils only, or sweeping-and-mopping only) sits at the bottom; sweeping, mopping, utensils and laundry together sits at the top. The stated upper figure of INR 12,000 appears to describe a near-full-time task load, so this range is capped at 9,000 where both sources agree.

Moves with: Number of tasks, flat size, locality (Bandra, Andheri and Powai are explicitly quoted higher), and how many other households the worker already serves in the same building.

  • cook, one meal₹5k₹15k / month

IMPORTANT - this band covers one OR two meals: neither source publishes a separate one-meal and two-meal rate. Kaamwalibais quotes INR 5,000-15,000/month for a part-time cook and states the drivers are 'number of meals, family size, cuisine type'; GetBai quotes INR 7,000-15,000/month for a cook. One simple meal for a couple sits near the bottom; two meals with rotis for a family of four or more sits near the top.

Moves with: Number of meals, family size, cuisine complexity, whether the cook also does utensils.

  • full-time live-out₹12k₹30k / month

GetBai quotes INR 12,000-20,000/month for a full-time maid working 8-10 hours a day; Kaamwalibais quotes INR 15,000-30,000/month for 'all-day availability with cleaning, laundry, cooking'. The worker goes home at night.

Moves with: Hours, whether cooking is included, household size, locality.

  • live-in₹20k₹40k / month

GetBai quotes INR 20,000-35,000/month for a 24-hour live-in maid; Kaamwalibais quotes INR 20,000-40,000+ for 'round-the-clock availability', and both state that a private sleeping space and meals are provided by the household on top of the cash salary. 'Round-the-clock availability' is the sources' own phrasing and is not a lawful working pattern - see notes.

Moves with: Household size, presence of children or an elderly person, night duties, flat size.

  • nanny / childcare₹10k₹35k / month

GetBai quotes INR 10,000-22,000/month for a babysitter/nanny; Kaamwalibais quotes INR 12,000-35,000/month for babysitter/childcare, with the range driven by 'child age, number of children, experience'. The top of the range is for live-in infant care.

Moves with: Child's age, number of children, live-in vs live-out, experience and training.

  • elder care₹18k₹40k / month

Kaamwalibais quotes INR 18,000-40,000/month for an elder caregiver based on 'assistance requirements and health monitoring', and INR 18,000-45,000 for a patient caretaker handling mobility, medication and post-surgery care. This is non-medical attendant work; trained nursing is a separate and higher-paid category.

Moves with: Level of physical assistance needed, night duty, live-in vs live-out, training.

How people actually find someone

  • existing staff referral

The ILO's 2017 survey of over 1,000 employer households in Delhi and Mumbai found hiring is overwhelmingly informal: 51% of employers found their worker through neighbours and 21% through other domestic workers already working nearby; relatives and friends were used more in Mumbai than in Delhi. In practice a household asks the family next door, or asks the worker they already employ to bring someone.

Cost: No fee. A referral costs nothing; do not let anyone charge the incoming worker for the introduction.

  • Urban Company (Insta Help, formerly Insta Maids)

An on-demand hourly cleaning/cooking service piloted in Mumbai in March 2025, booked in the Urban Company app for a 15-minute-arrival slot. Launched at an introductory customer price of INR 49/hour (reduced from INR 245/hour), with Urban Company stating service partners are paid INR 150-180/hour plus health, life and accident insurance, and that 132 hours a month (22 days x 6 hours) yields an 'assured' INR 20,000. The brand was renamed from 'Insta Maids' to 'Insta Help' within days after criticism.

Cost: Charged per hour to the customer; introductory price INR 49/hour at launch. Not a placement fee - the worker stays a platform partner, not your employee.

  • Helper4U

An online placement marketplace operating since 2016 for maids, cooks, nannies, caregivers and drivers. Households buy a tiered hiring package to see helper profiles and interview candidates; the salary is then agreed directly with the worker.

Cost: Tiered one-off hiring packages paid by the household; the site states 'No Commission, No Monthly Fees' on the worker's salary. Package prices are not published on the public pages.

  • BookMyBai / GetBai and Kaamwalibais (Expoint Recruitment Private Limited)

Mumbai-region placement agencies covering Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. They maintain a candidate pool, run their own identity and address checks, and place a worker with the household; both publish annual Mumbai salary guides that this dataset draws on.

Cost: GetBai refers to 'one-time or annual service charges' for agency placement but does not publish the amount; Kaamwalibais does not publish a fee on its salary page.

  • MyGate

Not a hiring channel but the system most MMR societies run the gate on: MyGate reports 27,000+ communities and 5 million+ homes across 50+ cities using it for visitor management, resident communication and society administration. Daily help are normally issued a gate pass or code through it, so a new worker has to be added by the flat owner or tenant before they can enter.

Cost: Paid for by the society, not the individual household.

In Worli: Premium towers; staff often live-in or from Worli Koliwada/BDD. , our own read on the area, without a source behind it, unlike everything above.

What the law says

There is no legal minimum wage for domestic work here.

Domestic work is not a scheduled employment in this state, so nothing sets a floor. That makes what you pay a matter of conscience rather than compliance.

Police verification

Mumbai Police runs a free online 'Domestic Servant' registration form on its own site. The employer selects the jurisdictional police station and submits the worker's full name, date and place of birth, contact number, physical description, native and current addresses, languages, full previous-employer history and any police cases, plus a photograph and full-body photograph, an identity proof (Aadhaar, licence, passport), a residence proof (Aadhaar, utility bill, rental agreement) and the ID and photo of a character referee, ending with a certification that the information is accurate. Navi Mumbai Police runs a separate 'Servant Registration' form for its jurisdiction. Elsewhere in Maharashtra the application is made at the local police station. Guidance on the Maharashtra procedure states it is advisory rather than compulsory, and that the verification report carries no fixed validity period - it is valid for as long as the person accepting it treats it as current.

The official page

Worth knowing

  • Because Maharashtra has no notified domestic-worker wage, the only public wage benchmarks are (a) the state's general unskilled minimum wage, reported at about INR 13,921/month Zone I from 1 January 2026, and (b) what the market pays. A household paying a full-time live-out worker below that unskilled figure is paying less than Maharashtra treats as the floor for any other unskilled job, even though no inspector will enforce it here.
  • The last independent (non-agency) wage evidence for Mumbai is the ILO's 2017 employer survey: per household per month, washing utensils INR 400 minimum and about INR 1,000 average; house cleaning INR 300 minimum, about INR 1,000 average; washing clothes INR 300 minimum, about INR 1,000 average; child care from INR 3,000-4,000; care of the elderly or sick from INR 6,000. These are 2017 figures and are included only to show how per-task pricing works, not as current rates.
  • Registration with the Maharashtra Domestic Workers Welfare Board (Act of 2008) is the worker's own entitlement, for accident, medical, maternity, children's education and funeral benefits. It is voluntary and worker-initiated; there is no employer registration requirement in the Act. A fair employer helps with the paperwork and does not deduct anything for it.
  • The ILO survey found leave norms already shifting in employers' practice: workers typically expected two to four days off a month and deducting wages for that leave was declining. Written contracts were rare, and slightly more common where an agency was involved. Annual increments were negotiated case by case; there was no standard bonus structure - a Diwali bonus is a widespread convention rather than a legal entitlement.
  • For a live-in worker, the practical standard published by placement agencies is a defined sleeping place with a mattress and somewhere to keep belongings, an agreed number of meals, genuinely free rest time as distinct from merely being in the house, a fixed weekly day off decided before the job starts, space to change, and access to a phone to contact family. Confiscating or restricting a worker's phone, or holding their Aadhaar or other original documents, is a known cause of workers leaving and, where it restricts a person's freedom to leave, engages the constitutional prohibition on forced labour.
  • The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 expressly covers domestic workers, and the route for a household worker is the district Local Committee rather than an internal committee. The Martha Farrell Foundation's 2018 study of 291 part-time domestic workers found that not one of them knew Local Committees existed, and that only 191 of 655 districts nationally had constituted one. A household employing anyone should know their district's Local Committee exists and that the worker can go to it.
  • The gate is a real constraint in most MMR societies: entry for daily help is normally through a society app or register, and some societies impose separate service lifts, restricted hours or ID-deposit rules. Ask before you sign a lease if you plan to employ someone, and refuse any society rule that requires a worker to surrender an original ID document at the gate.

Researched 2026-09. Rates and rules both move; check the official page before you rely on the process, and treat the ranges as a shape rather than a quote.

The honest traffic read

Dr Annie Besant Road is Worli's spine and jams through both peaks, worst at Worli Naka and Atria Mall — BMC has planned a bridge specifically to unclog the junction. The Sea Link and Coastal Road merge at the Worli end and back up sharply in the evening peak; the Sea Face road stays freer but feeds the same chokes.

When the streets fill up

Worli Koliwada keeps its own calendar — Golfa Devi shrine festivals and the Worlikar Kombad Holi — and Ganeshotsav processions thread the narrow koliwada lanes by the fort. Big NSCI Dome concert nights flood Annie Besant Road with event traffic.

Cooks, househelp & staff. How it actually works

  1. 1

    The society network hires first

Most cooks and househelps in a building already work in it. Ask the society office and your floor's neighbours before anything else — staff who are known to the building come with built-in references and realistic timings.

  2. 2

The watchman is the real directory

Security staff know who serves which flats, who has a free slot, and who is reliable. A polite word at the gate typically produces two or three introductions within days.

  3. 3

    Agree the terms everyone uses

Monthly pay scales with tasks and building norms — ask two neighbours what the going rate is on your floor before negotiating. Standard practice: one paid day off a week, a Diwali bonus of one month's pay, and advance notice on leave both ways.

  4. 4

    Do the verification properly

Police verification for domestic staff can be done through your city police's citizen portal — Mumbai and Delhi run it online; Bengaluru accepts forms at the local station. Most societies require it, and good staff expect it. Keep a copy of ID, and share your own references too; trust runs both ways.
