Living here
A Tuesday in Thergaon
Getting home
Everything comes through Dange Chowk, under the flyover, and so do you, because there is no station, no metro, nothing within reach, so the last five minutes are always on wheels. Wave an auto down at the chowk or at Kokane Chowk and give the society name; the drivers know Thergaon better than any map does. Then the lanes narrow and the noise drops off fast.
Your street
On the Kalewadi flank the lanes are tight and parked on both sides, with chemists and gyms worked into the ground floors, Sky Fit, New Hardcore, Zeno Health right at Dange Chowk. Hedgewar Road is the civilised one, wide enough for the D Mart traffic. Laxman Nagar and the gaothan keep the old grain: low buildings, shop-front steps, the Barne kridangan as the local lung.
How the week goes
Eight to half ten going out, half six to half nine coming back, and on bad days those two nearly meet. The strange thing about living here is that both the Wari and the visarjan closures route their diverted traffic through Dange Chowk while no procession actually passes through Thergaon: the jam without the parade. Your own festival is smaller, pandals in the gaothan lanes, garba on the kridangan.
What you'd put up with
Dange Chowk is not a junction you pass through occasionally; it is your junction, every single day, in both directions. There is no rail fallback at all, the nearest working metro station being PCMC Bhavan some six kilometres east. And if the flat is anywhere near the Mula, check the blue line: PCMC surveyed for demolitions along it in 2024, and ten kilometres of it sit inside city limits.
Written from the same researched record as the rest of this page. Every place named here is one we hold a source for. Where we had nothing to say about a corner, we left it out rather than filling it in.

PCMC is very likely at parity with Pune city at 7%, and the metro cess is independently confirmed to reach Pimpri-Chinchwad. One lender publishes a lower location-dependent range, which we could not reconcile. Treat 7% as the budget figure.
Government valuation
Not published here
We could not attribute a ready reckoner zone to Thergaon that we would be willing to put a number against. The zones are revenue villages rather than neighbourhoods, and for this one the boundaries did not line up closely enough to be honest about.

The vibe
Life in Thergaon
Thergaon runs from Dange Chowk down to the Pavana, with Kalewadi's dense older housing on one flank and a steady supply of mid-rise societies on the other. It is the pragmatic PCMC choice: Hinjewadi, Wakad, Aundh and Chinchwad are all reachable, the markets and clinics are close, and two-bedroom rents undercut Wakad by a clear margin for comparable buildings. Dange Chowk itself is one of the twin city's worst junctions and it is your junction, all day, every day. The older Kalewadi-side lanes are tight and heavily parked, the riverside stretch has had drainage and encroachment problems, and green space amounts to a couple of PCMC gardens.

Festivals, crowds and what to expect
No traffic advisory we have read names Thergaon for a festival. That does not mean the year is quiet here. It means the disruption has not been big enough to reach a published advisory, which is a useful thing to know but not the same as silence.
Also noted locally in Thergaon
Ganesh Chaturthi
Aug–Sep, 10 daysGanesh visarjan draws Thergaon's mandals to the Mula riverside immersion points, and the Pimpri Chinchwad police plan routes surrounding-division traffic through Dange Chowk on those evenings, so the junction absorbs both the processions and the diverted through traffic.
Ashadhi Wari
Jun–Jul, palkhi fortnightThe Ashadhi Wari palkhi weeks in early July use Dange Chowk as one of the standing diversion routes when Nigdi and Pimpri roads close, which makes an already-slow junction worse for four or five days without any procession actually passing through Thergaon.
Navratri
Sep–Oct, 9 nightsGaneshotsav pandals occupy the Laxman Nagar and Thergaon gaothan lanes for the ten days, and Navratri garba is held on the Barne kridangan and the society grounds along Hedgewar Road.

Worth knowing
- Dange Chowk: the junction absorbs Hinjewadi-bound traffic whenever the expressway side jams, and is bad 8–10.30am outbound and 6.30–9.30pm inbound
- Used as a standing diversion route during both the Ashadhi Wari and Ganesh visarjan closure programmes, so the area gets the congestion without the procession
- Mula blue flood line on the southern edge — 10 km of it inside PCMC limits, with a 2024 demolition survey behind it
- No metro, no station, no rail within reach: every trip is on the road
- Construction dust and lorry movement from continuing apartment development on the Wakad and Kalewadi fringes
- Alternate-day PCMC water, with tanker dependence in some newer societies
The decibel calculator— how loud does it actually get here?
Estimated at a Thergaon home · Aug–Sep
80–95 dB
Like a loud procession passing — you'll pause conversations near windows.
Pune's defining ten days — mandal loudspeakers, dhol-tasha pathaks and immersion processions converging on Laxmi Road and the river ghats; MPCB monitoring has repeatedly logged readings above 100 dB along the procession corridors.
Modelled estimate (noise-v1.0) from this area's festival calendar and quietness, anchored to MPCB Ganeshotsav monitoring. Laxmi Road procession corridors have repeatedly measured above 100 dB during visarjan. Not a measurement at your window — but an honest basis for the decision.

On the ground
Traffic and infrastructure
Thergaon is the hinge between PCMC and the Wakad–Hinjewadi side, and it pays for it. Dange Chowk is the junction everything crosses — the Aundh–Ravet road runs through it under a flyover, and it is the road Hinjewadi-bound traffic takes when the expressway side is jammed, so 8–10.30am outbound and 6.30–9.30pm inbound are genuinely bad. Thergaon Phata and Kokane Chowk carry the Kalewadi and Rahatani overflow onto the same road. There is no railway station and no metro here at all; the Purple Line does not come near Thergaon, the nearest operating station being PCMC Bhavan about 6 km east, so every trip out is on wheels. The Mula river is the southern edge, which means bridge-dependent movement towards Aundh and Baner rather than an open grid.
- Roads
- Aundh–Ravet road through Dange Chowk with a flyover over the junction (Wikipedia, Thergaon). Beyond that arterial the Thergaon gaothan and Laxman Nagar lanes are narrow and were not planned for the density now on them. PCMC standard elsewhere, with the city-wide monsoon pothole backlog.
- Water
- PCMC alternate-day supply (Punekar News, 27 Aug 2024). Thergaon's rapid apartment growth on the Wakad side means tanker top-ups are a normal part of some societies' budgets — verify per building rather than assuming.
- Power
- MSEDCL. Nothing Thergaon-specific established.
- Drainage & monsoon
- The Mula is the area's southern edge and PCMC counts 10 km of Mula frontage inside the blue flood line alongside 24.34 km of Pavana and 20.85 km of Indrayani; the corporation surveyed unauthorised structures in that zone for demolition in August 2024 (The Bridge Chronicle). Riverfront addresses in Thergaon need the flood line checked explicitly.
Getting around
Public transport and last mile
- Metro
- None, and none approved. The Purple Line does not come near Thergaon; PCMC Bhavan, about 6 km east, is the nearest operating station. The Aqua Line (Vanaz–Ramwadi) is on the PMC side of the river and is not a Thergaon option either.
- Rail
- No station and no useful rail. Chinchwad and Akurdi stations are 5–7 km away across congested roads, which cancels most of their value.
- Bus
- PMPML along the Aundh–Ravet road and through Dange Chowk, including the BRTS corridor Thergaon's Wikipedia entry describes running through Dange Chowk. Serviceable, not a spine.
- Last mile
- Two-wheeler or rickshaw, and the two-wheeler is not optional here. Thergaon's value is proximity to Hinjewadi and Wakad, and that proximity is only realised on wheels.

What it costs in Pune
- part-time cleaning (jhadu-pocha)₹4.5k – ₹10k / month
MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 4,500-9,000/month for a part-time maid, defined as '1-4 hours a day - sweeping-mopping, utensils, dusting and laundry on a fixed daily slot'. Broomees, which operates in Pune, quotes INR 6,000-10,000/month for part-time maids across its service cities. MyBuddyMaid explicitly labels its numbers 'indicative monthly bands, not quotes' and publishes identical bands for every city, so they carry no Pune-specific signal.
Moves with: Hours per day, days per week, tasks included, household and home size, locality.
- cook, one meal₹10k – ₹18k / month
IMPORTANT - not split by number of meals. MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 10,000-18,000/month for a cook covering 'one or more daily meal slots, matched to your cuisine and diet preferences'. No Pune-specific source separates a one-meal from a two-meal rate.
Moves with: Number of meal slots, cuisine, family size.
- full-time live-out₹12.5k – ₹26k / month
Broomees quotes INR 12,500-20,000/month for full-time maids across its cities including Pune. MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 16,000-26,000/month for a full-time maid working '8-12 hours a day (or live-in) who handles all daily household chores' - its band does not separate live-out from live-in.
Moves with: Hours, task mix, household size, locality.
- nanny / childcare₹14k – ₹24k / month
MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 14,000-24,000/month for 'trained childcare help for infants, toddlers and school-age children'. Band is not Pune-specific.
Moves with: Child's age, number of children, live-in vs live-out, training.
- elder care₹15k – ₹25k / month
MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 15,000-25,000/month for 'non-medical companionship and daily assistance for senior citizens at home'. Band is not Pune-specific.
Moves with: Level of assistance, night duty, live-in vs live-out.
How people actually find someone
Broomees
Operates in Pune alongside Delhi NCR, Bangalore and Ranchi, placing all-rounders, cooks, babysitters, domestic help, elderly and patient care providers and 24-hour live-in workers. The household books online and Broomees sends vetted candidates; it states the salary 'is to be mutually discussed and directly managed between the customer and the helper' and that it takes no cut from the worker's salary.
Cost: INR 49 booking fee plus 18% GST (about INR 57.82), periodically waived for the all-rounder service, plus a monthly membership fee. Salary is paid directly to the worker.
MyBuddyMaid
Placement platform with a dedicated Pune city page and pincode-level service pages. One-time access fee for a verified candidate pool; the household interviews and agrees the salary with the helper after the interview.
Cost: One-time access charge: Silver INR 4,999, Gold INR 5,999, Diamond INR 6,999.
Helper4U
Pan-India placement marketplace for maids, cooks, nannies, caregivers and drivers, operating since 2016; households buy a hiring package to view profiles and interview candidates.
Cost: Tiered one-off hiring packages paid by the household; states no commission and no monthly fees on the worker's salary.
MyGate
Used by Pune societies for visitor management, resident communication and society accounting - 27,000+ communities and 5 million+ homes across 50+ cities. Daily help are normally admitted on a resident-issued gate code or pass.
Cost: Paid by the society.
In Thergaon: Thergaon gaothan, Laxman Nagar and the Kalewadi settlements immediately north supply a large domestic workforce, and the Hinjewadi service economy has made part-time help a routine arrangement here. Supply is genuinely easy; competition from Wakad and Hinjewadi households is what moves the price, and no rates were sourced. , our own read on the area, without a source behind it, unlike everything above.
What the law says
There is no legal minimum wage for domestic work here.
Domestic work is not a scheduled employment in this state, so nothing sets a floor. That makes what you pay a matter of conscience rather than compliance.
Police verification
Maharashtra's procedure applies: the household applies for a domestic help / servant verification at the nearest police station, submitting a passport-size photograph of the worker and a photo identity proof (Aadhaar, driving licence, ration card, voter ID or PAN). Guidance on the state procedure states it is advisory rather than compulsory, and that the resulting verification report has no fixed validity period - it lasts as long as whoever is relying on it accepts it. For a formal police clearance certificate, Maharashtra runs pcs.mahaonline.gov.in, a six-step flow (registration, login, application, fee payment, verification by the local police station, verification by the citizen facilitation centre) with a 24x7 helpline on 1800 120 8040. Unlike Mumbai Police, Pune City Police does not publish a dedicated online domestic-servant form that could be verified; its site is a JavaScript application whose forms section could not be read.
The official pageWorth knowing
- Pune has no legal wage floor for domestic work. The nearest honest benchmark is Maharashtra's general unskilled minimum wage, about INR 13,921/month Zone I from 1 January 2026 - a full-time live-out worker paid less than that is being paid below what the state considers the floor for unskilled work in any other sector.
- Registration with the Maharashtra Domestic Workers Welfare Board is the worker's own entitlement and is voluntary; the 2008 Act imposes no registration duty on employers and no employer contribution. A fair employer helps with the paperwork - and with free e-Shram registration - and deducts nothing for either.
- Pune's IT-corridor societies (Hinjewadi, Kharadi, Baner, Wakad) are largely gated with app-based entry, so a new worker cannot get in until the resident adds her at the gate. Check the society's rules on daily-help entry hours and lift access before you sign a lease, and refuse any rule that requires a worker to leave an original ID document at the gate.
- The ILO's 2017 employer survey covered Delhi and Mumbai, not Pune, but its finding on hiring channels is the best available guide to how this works anywhere in urban India: 51% of employer households found their worker through neighbours, 21% through other domestic workers already working nearby, and only 2% through a formal agency. Expect the same in Pune, and expect that a referral chain costs nothing - do not let anyone charge the incoming worker for an introduction.
- Written terms cost nothing and prevent most disputes: hours, tasks, the monthly amount, the pay date, paid leave, notice on both sides, and the festival bonus if you intend to give one. The ILO survey found written contracts rare, and that workers typically expected two to four days off a month with wage deduction for that leave already declining as a practice.
- The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 covers domestic workers, with the route being the district Local Committee rather than an internal committee. Awareness among workers is close to zero - the Martha Farrell Foundation's 2018 study of 291 domestic workers found none had approached a Local Committee.
Researched 2026-09. Rates and rules both move; check the official page before you rely on the process, and treat the ranges as a shape rather than a quote.

Cooks, househelp & staff. How it actually works
- 1
The society network hires first
Most cooks and househelps in a building already work in it. Ask the society office and your floor's neighbours before anything else — staff who are known to the building come with built-in references and realistic timings.
- 2
The watchman is the real directory
Security staff know who serves which flats, who has a free slot, and who is reliable. A polite word at the gate typically produces two or three introductions within days.
- 3
Agree the terms everyone uses
Monthly pay scales with tasks and building norms — ask two neighbours what the going rate is on your floor before negotiating. Standard practice: one paid day off a week, a Diwali bonus of one month's pay, and advance notice on leave both ways.
- 4
Do the verification properly
Police verification for domestic staff can be done through your city police's citizen portal — Mumbai and Delhi run it online; Bengaluru accepts forms at the local station. Most societies require it, and good staff expect it. Keep a copy of ID, and share your own references too; trust runs both ways.
