Getting home

Off the Mumbai-Bangalore highway at Balewadi Phata, and then onto a road that is also everybody else's shortcut, because Hinjewadi's evening outflow uses it to reach Baner and Aundh. Radha Chowk is where you stop and wait; residents asked for wider underpasses two years ago and it still jams daily. The last stretch has no footpath and not much lighting, and then a lobby.

Your street

Between the finished towers there is gravel, hoarding and the next project. The flats are new and large and the street outside them is not finished, and may not be for a while. There is no grocery worth naming inside the area, which tells you where the shopping happens. What there is: pickleball courts, an astroturf, two swimming pools and a stadium at the end of it.

How the week goes

Evenings are decided in Hinjewadi. From six the shortcut fills, and event days at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, which sits physically inside Mahalunge, put a stadium crowd onto the same two roads. Navratri happens in society clubhouses and on open plots rather than a maidan, finishes late, and parks its overflow along a road with no lights. Social life stays in Balewadi.

What you'd put up with

Promised is the operative word. The Mahalunge-Maan planning scheme is meant to give this place a street grid; land demarcation was still unresolved and the original contractor was dropped. The residents' forum put the road's potholes, incomplete bridge work, missing footpaths and lighting to the Deputy Chief Minister in February 2024, and the list has not changed much since. Water arrives by tanker, PMC tax notwithstanding.

Written from the same researched record as the rest of this page. Every place named here is one we hold a source for. Where we had nothing to say about a corner, we left it out rather than filling it in.

The vibe

Life in Mahalunge

3 homes · 14 places

Mahalunge is the strip of land north-west of Balewadi that Pune's larger developers moved into once Balewadi High Street filled up, and it now holds some of the newest premium towers in the west, with the Mahalunge-Maan town planning scheme meant to give it a proper street grid eventually. The pitch is strong on paper: Hinjewadi Phase 2 is minutes away across the highway, Balewadi's restaurants and the stadium are a short hop, and the flats are larger and newer than equivalent money buys in Baner. In practice it is still half-built, with hoardings, gravel and uncertain internal roads between finished projects, and the approach from the Mumbai-Bangalore highway is the usual scrum. Almost everything social still happens in Balewadi or Baner, not here.

The calendar

Festivals, crowds and what to expect

No traffic advisory we have read names Mahalunge for a festival. That does not mean the year is quiet here. It means the disruption has not been big enough to reach a published advisory, which is a useful thing to know but not the same as silence.

Also noted locally in Mahalunge
  • Ganesh Chaturthi

    Aug–Sep, 10 days

Ganeshotsav is the festival that closes roads in Mahalunge: mandals from the Mahalunge and Balewadi gaothans process to the Mula river immersion ghats on the PMC side, and the visarjan convoys funnel through Radha Chowk, the junction Mahalunge residents already described to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in February 2024 as jamming daily without any extra load.

  • Navratri

    Sep–Oct, 9 nights

Navratri is the second one to plan around, because the garba and dandiya nights here are run out of the large Mahalunge-Balewadi society clubhouses and open plots rather than a public maidan, they finish late, and the overflow parks along the Mahalunge-Hinjawadi IT Park road, which the same residents' letter described as unlit and without footpaths.

Area-level colour from our own research, without a road-level advisory behind it. The dated calendar above is the sourced layer.

Worth knowing

  • Radha Chowk jams daily - residents formally asked for wider underpasses and better signals in February 2024 and the junction is still the pinch point
  • The Mahalunge-Hinjawadi IT Park road: potholes, incomplete bridge work, no footpaths, no lighting, no CCTV
  • Tanker dependence, with residents saying supply is insufficient despite paying PMC tax
  • Event days at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, which is physically inside Mahalunge, put crowds onto the same two roads
  • Hinjawadi's evening outflow uses Mahalunge as a shortcut to Baner and Aundh
  • The proposed IT park and much of the Mahalunge-Maan TP scheme remain a promise - land demarcation was still unresolved and the original contractor was dropped

Pune's defining ten days — mandal loudspeakers, dhol-tasha pathaks and immersion processions converging on Laxmi Road and the river ghats; MPCB monitoring has repeatedly logged readings above 100 dB along the procession corridors.

Modelled estimate (noise-v1.0) from this area's festival calendar and quietness, anchored to MPCB Ganeshotsav monitoring. Laxmi Road procession corridors have repeatedly measured above 100 dB during visarjan. Not a measurement at your window — but an honest basis for the decision.

On the ground

Traffic and infrastructure

3/10
flow

Mahalunge's problem is that it is a shortcut. Traffic between Hinjawadi and Baner/Aundh cuts through the Mahalunge-Hinjawadi IT Park road rather than going round by the highway, and the Mahalunge-Balewadi Housing Societies Forum told Deputy CM Ajit Pawar in February 2024 that the road has incomplete bridge work, potholes, no footpaths and inadequate lighting. Radha Chowk, where Mahalunge meets Baner, jams daily and residents have asked for wider underpasses and better signalling. Balewadi Phata on the Mumbai-Bangalore highway is the other constraint, and event days at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex - which is physically in Mahalunge - put stadium crowds onto the same two roads.

Roads
The Mahalunge-Hinjawadi IT Park road has incomplete bridge work, potholes, no footpaths, no CCTV and inadequate lighting, and Radha Chowk jams daily - all from the Mahalunge-Balewadi Housing Societies Forum's letter to Deputy CM Ajit Pawar (Punekar News, 11 Feb 2024). The PMRDA Mahalunge-Maan TP Scheme covers 250.26 hectares and plans 18.82 km of new roads, but its original contractor was dropped and plot demarcation was still being resolved.
Water
The clearest gap in this slice. Residents report insufficient supply despite paying tax and buying expensive private tankers, and have asked PMC for storage tanks or a pipeline (Punekar News, 11 Feb 2024). Mahalunge merged into PMC only in 2021, so it is at the back of the queue for the PMC network.
Power
MSEDCL. No specific area-level failure surfaced in the sources I checked; the large gated projects run their own backup as standard.
Drainage & monsoon
The TP scheme budgets 42.39 km of sewerage and 45.5 km of storm drainage for Mahalunge-Maan, which is a fair measure of how little exists today. Until that is delivered, drainage here is project-by-project rather than area-wide.

Getting around

Public transport and last mile

6/10
access
Metro
Line 3 (Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar, 23 km/23 stations) had completed end-to-end trial runs and its Maan-R.K. Laxman Museum phase (13.3 km, 12 stations) was 'ready for opening subject to statutory approvals' as of PuneNow, 18 June 2026; an earlier Swarajya report had it opening 31 March 2026, which did not happen, so treat it as imminent rather than running. Mahalunge sits beside that corridor on the Balewadi/Baner side, so it is the one area in this slice with a near-term metro prospect - but the evidence base is contradictory on when the Balewadi section actually carries passengers, and I could not confirm a station named for Mahalunge itself.
Rail
None. Pune Junction is 14 km east and irrelevant to daily life here.
Bus
PMPML on the Baner-Balewadi and Mahalunge-Hinjawadi roads, plus IT company shuttles to Hinjawadi. The Balewadi Phata stop on the Mumbai-Bangalore highway is the interchange point.
Last mile
Autos and cabs are reliable on the Baner side and thin on the Mahalunge gaothan side. Residents' own February 2024 letter describes the Mahalunge-Hinjawadi IT Park road as lacking footpaths and lighting, which is what walking the last kilometre actually means here.

What it costs in Pune

  • part-time cleaning (jhadu-pocha)₹4.5k₹10k / month

MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 4,500-9,000/month for a part-time maid, defined as '1-4 hours a day - sweeping-mopping, utensils, dusting and laundry on a fixed daily slot'. Broomees, which operates in Pune, quotes INR 6,000-10,000/month for part-time maids across its service cities. MyBuddyMaid explicitly labels its numbers 'indicative monthly bands, not quotes' and publishes identical bands for every city, so they carry no Pune-specific signal.

Moves with: Hours per day, days per week, tasks included, household and home size, locality.

  • cook, one meal₹10k₹18k / month

IMPORTANT - not split by number of meals. MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 10,000-18,000/month for a cook covering 'one or more daily meal slots, matched to your cuisine and diet preferences'. No Pune-specific source separates a one-meal from a two-meal rate.

Moves with: Number of meal slots, cuisine, family size.

  • full-time live-out₹12.5k₹26k / month

Broomees quotes INR 12,500-20,000/month for full-time maids across its cities including Pune. MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 16,000-26,000/month for a full-time maid working '8-12 hours a day (or live-in) who handles all daily household chores' - its band does not separate live-out from live-in.

Moves with: Hours, task mix, household size, locality.

  • nanny / childcare₹14k₹24k / month

MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 14,000-24,000/month for 'trained childcare help for infants, toddlers and school-age children'. Band is not Pune-specific.

Moves with: Child's age, number of children, live-in vs live-out, training.

  • elder care₹15k₹25k / month

MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 15,000-25,000/month for 'non-medical companionship and daily assistance for senior citizens at home'. Band is not Pune-specific.

Moves with: Level of assistance, night duty, live-in vs live-out.

How people actually find someone

  • Broomees

Operates in Pune alongside Delhi NCR, Bangalore and Ranchi, placing all-rounders, cooks, babysitters, domestic help, elderly and patient care providers and 24-hour live-in workers. The household books online and Broomees sends vetted candidates; it states the salary 'is to be mutually discussed and directly managed between the customer and the helper' and that it takes no cut from the worker's salary.

Cost: INR 49 booking fee plus 18% GST (about INR 57.82), periodically waived for the all-rounder service, plus a monthly membership fee. Salary is paid directly to the worker.

  • MyBuddyMaid

Placement platform with a dedicated Pune city page and pincode-level service pages. One-time access fee for a verified candidate pool; the household interviews and agrees the salary with the helper after the interview.

Cost: One-time access charge: Silver INR 4,999, Gold INR 5,999, Diamond INR 6,999.

  • Helper4U

Pan-India placement marketplace for maids, cooks, nannies, caregivers and drivers, operating since 2016; households buy a hiring package to view profiles and interview candidates.

Cost: Tiered one-off hiring packages paid by the household; states no commission and no monthly fees on the worker's salary.

  • MyGate

Used by Pune societies for visitor management, resident communication and society accounting - 27,000+ communities and 5 million+ homes across 50+ cities. Daily help are normally admitted on a resident-issued gate code or pass.

    Cost: Paid by the society.

In Mahalunge: The Mahalunge gaothan is small, and most cooks, maids and drivers commute in from Sus, Wakad or the Baner wastis. The premium Balewadi-side societies compete for the same pool and pay above the PCMC belt's rates, so help is findable but not cheap or instant. , our own read on the area, without a source behind it, unlike everything above.

What the law says

There is no legal minimum wage for domestic work here.

Domestic work is not a scheduled employment in this state, so nothing sets a floor. That makes what you pay a matter of conscience rather than compliance.

Police verification

Maharashtra's procedure applies: the household applies for a domestic help / servant verification at the nearest police station, submitting a passport-size photograph of the worker and a photo identity proof (Aadhaar, driving licence, ration card, voter ID or PAN). Guidance on the state procedure states it is advisory rather than compulsory, and that the resulting verification report has no fixed validity period - it lasts as long as whoever is relying on it accepts it. For a formal police clearance certificate, Maharashtra runs pcs.mahaonline.gov.in, a six-step flow (registration, login, application, fee payment, verification by the local police station, verification by the citizen facilitation centre) with a 24x7 helpline on 1800 120 8040. Unlike Mumbai Police, Pune City Police does not publish a dedicated online domestic-servant form that could be verified; its site is a JavaScript application whose forms section could not be read.

The official page

Worth knowing

  • Pune has no legal wage floor for domestic work. The nearest honest benchmark is Maharashtra's general unskilled minimum wage, about INR 13,921/month Zone I from 1 January 2026 - a full-time live-out worker paid less than that is being paid below what the state considers the floor for unskilled work in any other sector.
  • Registration with the Maharashtra Domestic Workers Welfare Board is the worker's own entitlement and is voluntary; the 2008 Act imposes no registration duty on employers and no employer contribution. A fair employer helps with the paperwork - and with free e-Shram registration - and deducts nothing for either.
  • Pune's IT-corridor societies (Hinjewadi, Kharadi, Baner, Wakad) are largely gated with app-based entry, so a new worker cannot get in until the resident adds her at the gate. Check the society's rules on daily-help entry hours and lift access before you sign a lease, and refuse any rule that requires a worker to leave an original ID document at the gate.
  • The ILO's 2017 employer survey covered Delhi and Mumbai, not Pune, but its finding on hiring channels is the best available guide to how this works anywhere in urban India: 51% of employer households found their worker through neighbours, 21% through other domestic workers already working nearby, and only 2% through a formal agency. Expect the same in Pune, and expect that a referral chain costs nothing - do not let anyone charge the incoming worker for an introduction.
  • Written terms cost nothing and prevent most disputes: hours, tasks, the monthly amount, the pay date, paid leave, notice on both sides, and the festival bonus if you intend to give one. The ILO survey found written contracts rare, and that workers typically expected two to four days off a month with wage deduction for that leave already declining as a practice.
  • The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 covers domestic workers, with the route being the district Local Committee rather than an internal committee. Awareness among workers is close to zero - the Martha Farrell Foundation's 2018 study of 291 domestic workers found none had approached a Local Committee.

Researched 2026-09. Rates and rules both move; check the official page before you rely on the process, and treat the ranges as a shape rather than a quote.

Everyday, in Mahalunge

  • Almost no everyday retail inside Mahalunge itself - Balewadi High Street and Baner are where the groceries, salons and restaurants are
  • Two named chemists inside the area; the nearest Tumbledry is at Dasara Chowk in Balewadi-Baner and does not list Mahalunge on its served areas
  • Six Playo-listed sports venues inside Mahalunge, heavy on pickleball - the densest pickleball supply in this slice
  • The Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex with its stadium, velodrome and public swimming pool is the area's real amenity
  • Nearest cinema is INOX Megaplex at Phoenix Mall of the Millennium, Wakad

Pune's civic layer runs through housing-society managing committees and mohalla committees working with the PMC's ward offices. Cooks, househelp & staff. How it actually works

  1. 1

    The society network hires first

Most cooks and househelps in a building already work in it. Ask the society office and your floor's neighbours before anything else — staff who are known to the building come with built-in references and realistic timings.

  2. 2

The watchman is the real directory

Security staff know who serves which flats, who has a free slot, and who is reliable. A polite word at the gate typically produces two or three introductions within days.

  3. 3

    Agree the terms everyone uses

Monthly pay scales with tasks and building norms — ask two neighbours what the going rate is on your floor before negotiating. Standard practice: one paid day off a week, a Diwali bonus of one month's pay, and advance notice on leave both ways.

  4. 4

    Do the verification properly

Police verification for domestic staff can be done through your city police's citizen portal — Mumbai and Delhi run it online; Bengaluru accepts forms at the local station. Most societies require it, and good staff expect it. Keep a copy of ID, and share your own references too; trust runs both ways.

Seasonal disruption

  • Navratri · Sep–Oct, 9 nights

Noticeable in the streets around it: Navratri is the second one to plan around, because the garba and dandiya nights here are run out of the large Mahalunge-Balewadi society clubhouses and open plots rather than a public maidan, they finish late, and the overflow parks along the Mahalunge-Hinjawadi IT Park road, which the same residents' letter described as unlit and without footpaths.

Water, power and roads

Drainage
The TP scheme budgets 42.39 km of sewerage and 45.5 km of storm drainage for Mahalunge-Maan, which is a fair measure of how little exists today. Until that is delivered, drainage here is project-by-project rather than area-wide.
