A Tuesday in Handewadi

Getting home

Almost all of it happens on one road. From the Salunkhe Vihar end you run down past Sayyed Nagar and its railway crossing to Handewadi Chowk, where The Dugout's floodlights are usually already on. The underpasses at Sasane Nagar and Sayyed Nagar are the two places the whole journey can stall, and between four and seven in the evening they generally do.

Your street

Character changes every hundred metres: a glass-fronted clubhouse, a stretch of compound wall, then Autadwadi and Bhekrai Nagar doing what they always did, with Salvi Dairy trading a few doors from a project gate. Amey Medical and Kohinoor Medico keep the medicine supply, Pawan Supermarket and Mayur Smart Bazar the rest. Two lanes, potholed in stretches, carrying all of it.

How the week goes

Afternoons are the tell here. Elsewhere the evening peak starts at six; on this road it starts at four, and any open PMC trench extends it. Mornings drain out towards Hadapsar and Magarpatta and the road goes briefly civil. Ten days of Ganeshotsav pandals leave very little carriageway between Handewadi Chowk and the Sayyed Nagar crossing, which on a road this width you feel.

What you'd put up with

For nearly a month in June 2026, stormwater and chamber works at the Sayyed Nagar railway crossing brought this road to a standstill every evening, with power cuts reported alongside the digging. Several societies buy tanker water. There is no hospital, no cinema and no laundry chain inside the area. You are paying under twenty thousand for a new two-bedroom, and this road is why.

Written from the same researched record as the rest of this page. Every place named here is one we hold a source for. Where we had nothing to say about a corner, we left it out rather than filling it in.

Life in Handewadi

3 homes · 18 places

Handewadi Road is the corridor that took the overflow from Undri and NIBM once those got expensive: rows of mid-rise projects, a few genuinely large ones, priced for people who want a new two-bedroom under twenty thousand and will drive for everything else. Bhekrai Nagar and the Autadwadi side still read as village, and the contrast between a glass-fronted clubhouse and a buffalo shed fifty metres away is the local character. The road itself is the weak point — narrow, potholed in stretches, and jammed twice a day carrying the whole Undri–Handewadi–Hadapsar flow. Water supply leans on tankers in several societies, and evening food options run to a handful of counters rather than anything you would call a scene.

The calendar

Festivals, crowds and what to expect

No traffic advisory we have read names Handewadi for a festival. That does not mean the year is quiet here. It means the disruption has not been big enough to reach a published advisory, which is a useful thing to know but not the same as silence.

Also noted locally in Handewadi
  • Ganesh Chaturthi

    Aug–Sep, 10 days

Ganeshotsav is the festival that lands hardest locally, because ten days of mandal pandals on a road this narrow leaves very little carriageway between Handewadi Chowk and the Sayyed Nagar crossing, and the citywide Pune visarjan advisory closes roads and diverts traffic on immersion day.

  • Ashadhi Wari

    Jun–Jul, palkhi fortnight

Ashadhi Wari closes the Pune-Solapur Highway along the procession route on the palkhi day (11 July in the 2026 advisory) and shuts Dive Ghat and Bopdev Ghat entirely for several days, which matters here because Handewadi Road's southern end feeds the Solapur Highway and Khadi Machine Chowk - the two directions the diversions are aimed at.

Area-level colour from our own research, without a road-level advisory behind it. The dated calendar above is the sourced layer.

Worth knowing

  • Handewadi Road is a single narrow connector and it stops dead between 4pm and 7pm when anything is being dug (Punekar News, 25 June 2026)
  • Sayyed Nagar railway crossing and the Sasane Nagar underpass - level-crossing and underpass delays, plus waterlogging at both
  • Frequent power outages reported during the road-widening work (Pune Pulse headline)
  • Ongoing PMC stormwater and widening works, with the PPP road package still to come
  • Solapur Highway freight at the southern end of the road
  • No laundry chain, no yoga studio, no cinema and no hospital inside the area
  • Ashadhi Wari closes the Pune-Solapur Highway on the palkhi day and shuts Dive Ghat and Bopdev Ghat entirely for several days

Pune's defining ten days — mandal loudspeakers, dhol-tasha pathaks and immersion processions converging on Laxmi Road and the river ghats; MPCB monitoring has repeatedly logged readings above 100 dB along the procession corridors.

Modelled estimate (noise-v1.0) from this area's festival calendar and quietness, anchored to MPCB Ganeshotsav monitoring. Laxmi Road procession corridors have repeatedly measured above 100 dB during visarjan. Not a measurement at your window — but an honest basis for the decision.

On the ground

Traffic and infrastructure

3/10
flow

Handewadi Road is the whole story: a single two-lane connector running from the Salunkhe Vihar / Sasane Nagar end past Sayyed Nagar to Handewadi Chowk and on to Solapur Highway, carrying the traffic of everything built along it. Punekar News (25 June 2026) recorded PMC stormwater-drainage and chamber works at the Sayyed Nagar railway crossing choking the road for nearly a month, with traffic coming to a standstill between 4pm and 7pm on a carriageway already narrow and potholed. The railway underpasses at Sasane Nagar and Sayyed Nagar are the structural bottleneck, and both are on Punekar News's 6 July 2026 list of eastern Pune waterlogging points. PMC has put Handewadi and Mohammadwadi roads into an Rs 88.83 crore PPP widening package (The Bridge Chronicle), so the road is scheduled to get better and to get worse first.

Roads
Handewadi Road, and not much else. Punekar News (25 June 2026) describes it as choked for nearly a month by PMC stormwater-drainage and chamber work at the Sayyed Nagar railway crossing, with large potholes, an uneven surface and a narrow carriageway, and traffic at a standstill between 4pm and 7pm. Autade-Handewadi joined PMC on 30 June 2021; the road is in the Rs 88.83 crore PMC PPP package with Mohammadwadi's (The Bridge Chronicle), and PMC's Standing Committee has approved DP roads for both.
Water
PMC supply since the 2021 merger, under the city-wide alternate-day regime. No Handewadi-specific supply story was established; the neighbouring Mohammadwadi water-quality problems are documented and the two share a supply corridor, so treat water quality as an open question here rather than a settled one.
Power
MSEDCL, and there is a local complaint on record: Pune Pulse has reported Handewadi residents facing frequent power outages amid the ongoing road-widening work. That was seen as a headline and not read in full, so treat the frequency as indicative.
Drainage & monsoon
Being built, disruptively. The stormwater drainage line and chamber construction at the Sayyed Nagar crossing is exactly the missing infrastructure residents elsewhere in eastern Pune are asking for, and Punekar News (6 July 2026) lists Sasane Nagar, Sayyed Nagar, the railway underpasses and Handewadi Road among the persistent waterlogging points.

Getting around

Public transport and last mile

4/10
access
Metro
None, and none approved. Nearest operating station is Swargate on the Purple Line, reached by road via Kondhwa or Bibvewadi. The Swargate-Hadapsar corridor, when built, would come no closer than Hadapsar.
Rail
No station. The Pune-Daund line crosses Handewadi Road at the Sayyed Nagar level crossing and the Sasane Nagar underpass, which is the road's structural bottleneck rather than a transport option.
Bus
PMPML along Handewadi Road towards Hadapsar and Salunkhe Vihar. Frequency is modest and the buses are stuck in the same queue as everyone else.
Last mile
Rickshaws at Handewadi Chowk. Otherwise a two-wheeler; the carriageway is narrow, the shoulders are unmade and the footpath is not continuous.

What it costs in Pune

  • part-time cleaning (jhadu-pocha)₹4.5k₹10k / month

MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 4,500-9,000/month for a part-time maid, defined as '1-4 hours a day - sweeping-mopping, utensils, dusting and laundry on a fixed daily slot'. Broomees, which operates in Pune, quotes INR 6,000-10,000/month for part-time maids across its service cities. MyBuddyMaid explicitly labels its numbers 'indicative monthly bands, not quotes' and publishes identical bands for every city, so they carry no Pune-specific signal.

Moves with: Hours per day, days per week, tasks included, household and home size, locality.

  • cook, one meal₹10k₹18k / month

IMPORTANT - not split by number of meals. MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 10,000-18,000/month for a cook covering 'one or more daily meal slots, matched to your cuisine and diet preferences'. No Pune-specific source separates a one-meal from a two-meal rate.

Moves with: Number of meal slots, cuisine, family size.

  • full-time live-out₹12.5k₹26k / month

Broomees quotes INR 12,500-20,000/month for full-time maids across its cities including Pune. MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 16,000-26,000/month for a full-time maid working '8-12 hours a day (or live-in) who handles all daily household chores' - its band does not separate live-out from live-in.

Moves with: Hours, task mix, household size, locality.

  • nanny / childcare₹14k₹24k / month

MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 14,000-24,000/month for 'trained childcare help for infants, toddlers and school-age children'. Band is not Pune-specific.

Moves with: Child's age, number of children, live-in vs live-out, training.

  • elder care₹15k₹25k / month

MyBuddyMaid's Pune page quotes INR 15,000-25,000/month for 'non-medical companionship and daily assistance for senior citizens at home'. Band is not Pune-specific.

Moves with: Level of assistance, night duty, live-in vs live-out.

How people actually find someone

  • Broomees

Operates in Pune alongside Delhi NCR, Bangalore and Ranchi, placing all-rounders, cooks, babysitters, domestic help, elderly and patient care providers and 24-hour live-in workers. The household books online and Broomees sends vetted candidates; it states the salary 'is to be mutually discussed and directly managed between the customer and the helper' and that it takes no cut from the worker's salary.

Cost: INR 49 booking fee plus 18% GST (about INR 57.82), periodically waived for the all-rounder service, plus a monthly membership fee. Salary is paid directly to the worker.

  • MyBuddyMaid

Placement platform with a dedicated Pune city page and pincode-level service pages. One-time access fee for a verified candidate pool; the household interviews and agrees the salary with the helper after the interview.

Cost: One-time access charge: Silver INR 4,999, Gold INR 5,999, Diamond INR 6,999.

  • Helper4U

Pan-India placement marketplace for maids, cooks, nannies, caregivers and drivers, operating since 2016; households buy a hiring package to view profiles and interview candidates.

Cost: Tiered one-off hiring packages paid by the household; states no commission and no monthly fees on the worker's salary.

  • MyGate

Used by Pune societies for visitor management, resident communication and society accounting - 27,000+ communities and 5 million+ homes across 50+ cities. Daily help are normally admitted on a resident-issued gate code or pass.

    Cost: Paid by the society.

In Handewadi: Handewadi is a gaothan with Bhekrai Nagar, Sasane Nagar and Uruli Devachi around it and a large, cheap rental stock for working households. Cooks, drivers and housekeeping are hired locally and the going rates are at the lower end of the eastern corridor. , our own read on the area, without a source behind it, unlike everything above.

What the law says

There is no legal minimum wage for domestic work here.

Domestic work is not a scheduled employment in this state, so nothing sets a floor. That makes what you pay a matter of conscience rather than compliance.

Police verification

Maharashtra's procedure applies: the household applies for a domestic help / servant verification at the nearest police station, submitting a passport-size photograph of the worker and a photo identity proof (Aadhaar, driving licence, ration card, voter ID or PAN). Guidance on the state procedure states it is advisory rather than compulsory, and that the resulting verification report has no fixed validity period - it lasts as long as whoever is relying on it accepts it. For a formal police clearance certificate, Maharashtra runs pcs.mahaonline.gov.in, a six-step flow (registration, login, application, fee payment, verification by the local police station, verification by the citizen facilitation centre) with a 24x7 helpline on 1800 120 8040. Unlike Mumbai Police, Pune City Police does not publish a dedicated online domestic-servant form that could be verified; its site is a JavaScript application whose forms section could not be read.

The official page

Worth knowing

  • Pune has no legal wage floor for domestic work. The nearest honest benchmark is Maharashtra's general unskilled minimum wage, about INR 13,921/month Zone I from 1 January 2026 - a full-time live-out worker paid less than that is being paid below what the state considers the floor for unskilled work in any other sector.
  • Registration with the Maharashtra Domestic Workers Welfare Board is the worker's own entitlement and is voluntary; the 2008 Act imposes no registration duty on employers and no employer contribution. A fair employer helps with the paperwork - and with free e-Shram registration - and deducts nothing for either.
  • Pune's IT-corridor societies (Hinjewadi, Kharadi, Baner, Wakad) are largely gated with app-based entry, so a new worker cannot get in until the resident adds her at the gate. Check the society's rules on daily-help entry hours and lift access before you sign a lease, and refuse any rule that requires a worker to leave an original ID document at the gate.
  • The ILO's 2017 employer survey covered Delhi and Mumbai, not Pune, but its finding on hiring channels is the best available guide to how this works anywhere in urban India: 51% of employer households found their worker through neighbours, 21% through other domestic workers already working nearby, and only 2% through a formal agency. Expect the same in Pune, and expect that a referral chain costs nothing - do not let anyone charge the incoming worker for an introduction.
  • Written terms cost nothing and prevent most disputes: hours, tasks, the monthly amount, the pay date, paid leave, notice on both sides, and the festival bonus if you intend to give one. The ILO survey found written contracts rare, and that workers typically expected two to four days off a month with wage deduction for that leave already declining as a practice.
  • The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 covers domestic workers, with the route being the district Local Committee rather than an internal committee. Awareness among workers is close to zero - the Martha Farrell Foundation's 2018 study of 291 domestic workers found none had approached a Local Committee.

Pune's civic layer runs through housing-society managing committees and mohalla committees working with the PMC's ward offices. Cooks, househelp & staff. How it actually works

  1. 1

    The society network hires first

Most cooks and househelps in a building already work in it. Ask the society office and your floor's neighbours before anything else — staff who are known to the building come with built-in references and realistic timings.

  2. 2

The watchman is the real directory

Security staff know who serves which flats, who has a free slot, and who is reliable. A polite word at the gate typically produces two or three introductions within days.

  3. 3

    Agree the terms everyone uses

Monthly pay scales with tasks and building norms — ask two neighbours what the going rate is on your floor before negotiating. Standard practice: one paid day off a week, a Diwali bonus of one month's pay, and advance notice on leave both ways.

  4. 4

    Do the verification properly

Police verification for domestic staff can be done through your city police's citizen portal — Mumbai and Delhi run it online; Bengaluru accepts forms at the local station. Most societies require it, and good staff expect it. Keep a copy of ID, and share your own references too; trust runs both ways.

PMC has put Handewadi and Mohammadwadi roads into an Rs 88.83 crore PPP widening package (The Bridge Chronicle), so the road is scheduled to get better and to get worse first.

Day to day

  • Handewadi Road is a single narrow connector and it stops dead between 4pm and 7pm when anything is being dug (Punekar News, 25 June 2026)
  • Sayyed Nagar railway crossing and the Sasane Nagar underpass - level-crossing and underpass delays, plus waterlogging at both
  • Frequent power outages reported during the road-widening work (Pune Pulse headline)
  • Ongoing PMC stormwater and widening works, with the PPP road package still to come

Seasonal disruption

  • Ganesh Chaturthi · Aug–Sep, 10 days

Noticeable in the streets around it: Ganeshotsav is the festival that lands hardest locally, because ten days of mandal pandals on a road this narrow leaves very little carriageway between Handewadi Chowk and the Sayyed Nagar crossing, and the citywide Pune visarjan advisory closes roads and diverts traffic on immersion day.

  • Ashadhi Wari · Jun–Jul, palkhi fortnight

Loud, for days at a time: Ashadhi Wari closes the Pune-Solapur Highway along the procession route on the palkhi day (11 July in the 2026 advisory) and shuts Dive Ghat and Bopdev Ghat entirely for several days, which matters here because Handewadi Road's southern end feeds the Solapur Highway and Khadi Machine Chowk - the two directions the diversions are aimed at.

Water, power and roads

Drainage
Being built, disruptively. The stormwater drainage line and chamber construction at the Sayyed Nagar crossing is exactly the missing infrastructure residents elsewhere in eastern Pune are asking for, and Punekar News (6 July 2026) lists Sasane Nagar, Sayyed Nagar, the railway underpasses and Handewadi Road among the persistent waterlogging points.
