The vibe
Life in Tarnaka
Tarnaka is the most liveable address in the north-east and one of the few in the city that is genuinely walkable: numbered streets on a grid, Osmania University's green sprawl on one flank, and a Blue Line station that puts Secunderabad and the corridor on one ride. The population is academics, ICRISAT and DRDO staff, and families who have been here three generations, which gives it a settled, bookish feel you do not get in the newer west. Housing is mostly older independent floors — lots of character, little parking, and lifts are rare. Rents have crept up as the metro matured, but it still costs less than anything comparable west of Begumpet.

Built only from real signals in FWA's curated set. Fresh availability, price changes and ops-approved community entries. No invented activity; community entries pin to the area centre, never to a guessed address.

Research in progress
We have Tarnaka's rents, commutes and character. The street-level layer is still being checked.
Everything above is ours to stand behind. What is not here yet are the named places — the chemist that stays open late, the turf you can actually book, which festival closes which road. We name those only once we have found them in a public source, so this section stays empty rather than plausible.

Hyderabad's civic layer runs through colony RWAs and the GHMC's ward system, federated city-wide by bodies like UFERWAS. The RWA office — every colony and gated community has one — handles gate norms, staff verification and the streets' actual conversation; ask the association office or your landlord for the current secretary's contact.
Cooks, househelp & staff. How it actually works
- 1
The society network hires first
Most cooks and househelps in a building already work in it. Ask the society office and your floor's neighbours before anything else — staff who are known to the building come with built-in references and realistic timings.
- 2
The watchman is the real directory
Security staff know who serves which flats, who has a free slot, and who is reliable. A polite word at the gate typically produces two or three introductions within days.
- 3
Agree the terms everyone uses
Monthly pay scales with tasks and building norms — ask two neighbours what the going rate is on your floor before negotiating. Standard practice: one paid day off a week, a Diwali bonus of one month's pay, and advance notice on leave both ways.
- 4
Do the verification properly
Police verification for domestic staff can be done through your city police's citizen portal — Mumbai and Delhi run it online; Bengaluru accepts forms at the local station. Most societies require it, and good staff expect it. Keep a copy of ID, and share your own references too; trust runs both ways.
